As this is a UK course, the content is written in English. This online course is suitable for linguists with any language pair (into and out of EN).
Content is specifically dictated by the CIOLQ exam and real-life requirements.
9 of the Modules cover non-language specific subject matters, such as Translation Techniques, Back Translation and Revision & Exam Preparation.
10 of the Modules are specific to your language pair (which we'll ask you to confirm upon enrolment). These are the Translation Practices and your LanguagePartnerᵀᴹ Mentor session.

The Examination is composed of three units:
Unit 01 (MANDATORY) - General Translation Skills
AND EITHER
Unit 02 - Business & Commercial Translation Skills
Unit 03 - Government & Public Service Translation Skills
ELIGIBILITY / PREREQUISITES
The CertTrans assesses professional translating skills to a graduate/post graduate level but is designed as a professionally applied vocational qualification.There are no set pre-requisites, however, you are strongly advised to ensure prior to registering that your level of linguistic attainment in the source language is at the very least equivalent to an Honours degree or a C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in writing. If you do not possess the recommended linguistic level, you may not pass your assessment.
It is the responsibility of each candidate to assure themselves that they are sufficiently prepared for the assessment, that they are competent in both the source and target languages, that they have good writing skills and that they have the ability to translate at reasonable speed and accuracy to a competent working level.
(CIOLQ)EXAM LANGUAGES
The CIOLQ add new language pairs all the time, and often due to linguist request. If you can’t see your language pair - please ask them! The more linguists that do this, the more likely it is that the language pair will be added to the examination roster.Please visit ciol.org.uk/CertTrans to see what languages the upcoming examinations are held in. Please bear in mind that even if the CIOLQ are not holding an exam in your language pair yet, upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Diploma which you can work with.

CertTrans compared to the DipTrans
The CIOLQ Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) is the gold standard professional translation qualification offered since 1989. It is set at Level 7 (Master’s level) and taken in around 40 countries annually. The DipTrans is a highly-specialised qualification for established professional translators and is recognised as among the most challenging and respected qualifications within the translating profession. It proves that holders of the qualification possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide translations of the very highest quality.
The CertTrans is set at Level 6 (degree level), shows working-level translation skills and can also be a stepping-stone towards the DipTrans.
