Translation Practice

Studying online does not have to mean studying alone. Translate a real past exam paper* in your own time, then have your work proofread and reviewed by an experienced LanguagePartner™ in your language pair, who returns detailed written guidance on what you did well and what to work on.
All language pairs. Buy on its own, or alongside any course.

"The main highlight for me was the translation practices, reviewed by a professional. This was essential for me to understand what mistakes I was making, how I could improve my translation skills, and it also helped me feel more confident about the work I was producing." What is a Translation Practice?
A real past exam paper for you to translate in your own time. Your work is then proofread by an experienced LanguagePartner™ in your language pair, who returns detailed written guidance on what you did well and what to work on.
Are the papers real past exam papers?
Real past CIOL exam papers are used where the CIOLQ provides them. Where they are not available, a suitable rubric-based match is used.
Do I need to be studying one of your courses?
No. Translation Practices are available to anyone, whether or not you have studied with us. Many linguists buy them purely as CPD.
Is there a deadline for submitting my translation?
No. Translate the paper in your own time and submit whenever you are ready.
What language pairs do you support?
All language pairs, into and out of English. See our full list of supported language pairs here. If you do not see your language pair, please contact us - we almost certainly have a LanguagePartner™ who can support you.
How long does feedback take?
Your LanguagePartner™ aims to return your feedback within a week of your submission. Please note that we advise against enrolling on a Translation Practice within two weeks of an upcoming exam.
Will my Translation Practice tell me whether I will pass the exam?
No. A Translation Practice is a learning exercise, not a prediction of your result. It shows you where your technique and terminology need work, and the CIOLQ alone determines exam outcomes.
What is the difference between Paper 1 and Paper 2?
They are different papers for the same Unit, so you can practise twice. Only buy Paper 2 if you have already completed Paper 1.
What is the difference between course-specific and General Practices?
Course-specific Practices use past papers from a particular qualification, so they match what you will face in that exam. General Practices use real-life source text at Foundation, Intermediate or Advanced level, and suit anyone wanting expert feedback on their translation work.
Can Translation Practices count towards my CPD?
Yes. Many professional linguist organisations expect their members to keep up with Continuing Professional Development, and Translation Practices can form part of that.
I am preparing for a different exam. Can you help?
Very possibly. If you are preparing for another translation, interpreting or language-based examination or screening and would like bespoke Practice, contact us and we will see what we can arrange.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Klarna and Clearpay are offered at checkout, allowing you to spread the cost (subject to their approval). Find out more at our payment options page.
Can I contact the team before buying?
Absolutely - please do. We are a team of real people based in Sheffield, and we are always happy to advise which Practice is right for you. Contact us at support@linguisttraining.com or via our contact page.
