Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DPSI qualification?
The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting) is a Degree-level recognised qualification at Level 6, awarded by CIOL and regulated by Ofqual. It has been the benchmark qualification for Public Service Interpreters in the UK for over 30 years, and the Law pathway is fully accepted by the UK Police for the PAIT Police Scheme. We provide the DPSI course and the exam preparation; CIOL sets and awards the qualification.
Who is this DPSI interpreter course for?
It is for Interpreters who want to work, or already work, in legal settings: Court Interpreters, Police Interpreters, and Public Service Interpreters covering tribunals, solicitors' offices and probation. You will need a strong command of both your languages - around CEFR C1 - before starting. If you are new to interpreting, the usual route is the FDTI, then the CCI, then the DPSI. Use our free language-level (CEFR) test and course quiz if you are unsure where you sit.
Is the DPSI course online?
Yes. The DPSI Law course is delivered entirely online as distance learning, with no face-to-face classes and no fixed timetable. You study at your own pace, from anywhere in the world, with 24/7 access. Video mentor sessions with your LanguagePartner™ are booked at a time that suits you.
How do I prepare for the CIOL DPSI exam?
Most students allow around six months. The DPSI exam is assessed in 5 units - one oral, two Sight Translation, two written translation - and they are marked separately, so you can pass some and resit others. Alongside the course we offer Sight Translation Papers, Translation Practices marked against CIOL criteria, Mock Exams sat under exam conditions, and LanguagePartner™ mentor sessions. All of these are included in the DPSI Law Big Bundle, or available separately.
When can I start?
Immediately. There are no term dates, no waiting lists, and no set lesson times. Once you enrol, you can log in and start studying straight away, any time of day or night.
Is the exam fee included in the course fee?
No. The course fee is paid to linguisttraining.com and covers your online course only. The CIOL DPSI Law exam fee is paid separately and directly to the CIOLQ. Visit ciol.org.uk for current exam fees and sitting dates.
Do I need to sit the exam?
No. Many students enrol on the DPSI Law course to develop their professional skills and knowledge for real-life assignments, and to gain a Course Diploma Certificate. The choice to sit the CIOL exam is entirely yours.
How long will I have access to the course?
You will have 24/7 access for 12 months from the date of enrolment.
What language pairs do you support?
All language pairs, into and out of English. See our full list of supported language pairs here. If you do not see your language pair, please contact us - we almost certainly have a LanguagePartner™ who can support you. We have previously supported students in Danish, Russian, Thai, Tigrinya, Romanian, Polish, Arabic, and many more.
I have experience as an Interpreter already. Is there still value in the course for me?
Absolutely. Many experienced Interpreters enrol specifically to deepen their legal knowledge, build specialist terminology, and consolidate their understanding of court and police procedures. If you are primarily interested in practice and feedback, you can also add Sight Translation Papers, Translation Practices, Mock Exams, or a LanguagePartner™ Mentor Session to your course. See Sight Translation Papers and Translation Practices, Mock Exams, and LanguagePartner™ Mentoring.
CIOL does not offer my language pair for the DPSI Law exam. Can I still take the course?
Yes. The linguisttraining.com DPSI Law course is available for all language pairs regardless of which language pairs the CIOLQ currently offers for their exam. If the CIOLQ does not yet offer your language pair, you can still benefit fully from the course itself and the Course Diploma Certificate. You can also register an interest in your language pair for future exam sessions directly with the CIOLQ at ciol.org.uk.
What is the difference between completing the course and gaining the qualification?
Completing the course earns you a linguisttraining.com Course Diploma Certificate. The official CIOL DPSI Law qualification (Ofqual-regulated, nationally recognised, Level 6) is awarded by the CIOLQ when you pass their exam.
I'm not sure whether to do DPSI Law or DPSI Health. What should I do?
Both courses are at Level 6 and follow the same structure - the difference is the specialist setting. DPSI Law focuses on legal settings such as courts, police interviews, and tribunals. DPSI Health focuses on healthcare settings such as hospitals, GP surgeries, and mental health consultations. Use our Which Course Is Right for You? tool, or just get in touch - we are always happy to talk it through.
What is the difference between the Big Bundle and the Course only?
The Course gives you full access to the 37-module online course and your Course Diploma Certificate. The Big Bundle adds 2 x Sight Translation Papers (Units 02 + 03), 2 x Translation Practices (Units 04 + 05), 5 x Mock Exams, and a LanguagePartner™ Mentor Session - everything you need to prepare thoroughly for the CIOL DPSI Law exam. Find out more about how bundles work.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes, in two ways. Klarna and Clearpay are offered at checkout when you pay in full (subject to their approval). We also offer our own payment plan with no credit check and no application: £249 today then 4 monthly payments of £100 for the Course (£649 total), or £449 today then 4 monthly payments of £200 for the Big Bundle (£1,249 total). Find out more at our payment options page.
Is funding available for this course?
Funding availability for linguist training courses can change, and any funding that does exist tends to be linked to the accredited CIOL qualification rather than the preparatory course itself. We recommend contacting us to discuss your situation, and checking directly with any relevant funding bodies. Contact us here.
Can I contact the team for advice before enrolling?
Absolutely - please do. We are a team of real people based in Sheffield, and we are always happy to discuss which course is right for you, your language pair, your experience level, or anything else you are unsure about. Contact us at support@linguisttraining.com or via our contact page.
